I’ve done my share of truck driving and a couple of
events involving a one lane bridge and an eagle came
to mind. Eagles have been known to come through
the windscreen, their take off burdened by a belly full
of roadkill. Swerving to miss them also comes with its
perils.

lyrics

well I’m driving into a rising sun
and there’s a shimmer on the road
there’s an eagle feeding on a beast
too heavy to lift its own load
I swerve across a double white line
there’s a crest approaching fast
that beast and me could share a common past
that beast and me could share a common past
we’ll I’m hauling out of Newcastle
on the top road to Lightning Ridge
drifting into a setting sun
and onto a one lane bridge
I’ll never know how we shared that road
our mirrors kissed as we passed
that Mack and me share a common past
that Mack and me share a common past
well the Gods they were shining on me
the Gods they shone on my past
yes the Gods were shining (down) on me
those Gods they shone on my past
what waits around the next corner
we’ll I’m not the one to know
don’t tempt fate if you’re running late
keep your blood off the road
keep your blood off the road
(may the Gods shine on you
may the Gods shine on you)
